The Power of Scale

The Nordseecluster combines four wind farm sites in the eastern part of the German North Sea into a 1.6 GW project. The combination of those four wind sites opens up unique economies of scale – making the whole of Nordseecluster more than the sum of its parts.

The Project

The Nordseecluster combines four wind farm sites in the eastern part of the German North Sea. With a total capacity of up to 1.6 GW the Nordseecluster will generate enough green electricity to supply the equivalent of 1,600,000 homes. The Nordseecluster will be constructed in two phases: The sites of Phase A (NC 1 and NC 2) are currently in the permit application phase. RWE was awarded the contract by the Federal Network Agency for the two sub-areas of Phase B (NC 3 and NC 4).

All four sites are located approximately 50 km north of the island of Juist. This area in the German Bight is dedicated to offshore wind. Our project is in the most southerly row of offshore projects within the EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone) and is bordered to the north and south by the main shipping traffic separation routes.

Development

The close proximity of the offshore sites offers the opportunity to develop one of the largest offshore wind farms in Germany – The Nordseecluster.

The merger of the four sites offers economies of scale and allows the development of the Nordseecluster B of the project (NC 3 and NC 4) together with the Nordseecluster A (NC 1 and NC 2). All major contracts are made for both phases of the project, allowing the supply chain to reliably plan manufacturing and leverage synergies to be cost efficient.

Experienced suppliers selected for RWE’s Nordseecluster

RWE has chosen experienced supply chain partners to implement its Nordseecluster: Atlantique Offshore Energy, the marine energy business unit of French company Chantiers de l’Atlantique, is the preferred supplier for two electrical offshore substations. Hellenic Cables was selected for the cable manufacturing. The monopile foundations for the wind turbines will be manufactured and delivered by Dajin Offshore and installed offshore by the Dutch company VanOord. Vestas has been selected to deliver a minimum of 104 offshore wind turbines (Type: V236-15.0 MW), with a capacity of 15 MW each. The Norwegian company Havfram Wind will transport and support the installation of the turbines, which is expected to start in 2026 for Nordseecluster A, with commercial operation launching in early 2027. Turbine installation works for Nordseecluster B are scheduled to begin in 2028 with commercial operation to start at the beginning of 2029. All deliverables are subject to the final investment decision for the individual phases of Nordseecluster (A and B).

Development

Capacity

The total capacity of the cluster will be up to 1.6 GW. This leads to a total annual power production of 6.400.000 MWh. This is enough to supply 1.600.000 average households with renewable energy.

Turbines

A minimum of 104 offshore wind turbines are planned to be installed north of the island of Juist. Each of the innovative, state of the art turbines will have a capacity of 15 MW.
